Herbaceous, shrubby plant 2 to 3 m tall, from the Malvaceae family, native to Africa but whose culture first developed in Asia.

An aromatic Vegetable plant.
We have a variety of green leaves, mainly used in food; and a variety with lanceolate red leaves, whose red calyxes of flowers are used for the production of syrup or pink tea (in Abyssinia), the bissap.

Uses of NGAI-NGAI
– Food: vegetable with a tangy flavor, used in soups and sauces with fish, eggs, poultry…

Red bissap juice (syrup) strongly perfumes fresh water. It is the national drink, popular in Guinea, Mali, Senegal, Benin, Burkina, Egypt, and Sudan.
